TexOS is about to have our 4th TexOS Teens project. TexOS takes donated computers from around San Angelo, Texas and the surrounding Concho Valley, fixes them up, installs Linux and other Open Source Software on them, trains people how to use them, then gives the computers away.
A special thanks for this batch of donated computers that comes from Howard College of San Angelo. Other thanks goes to Dr. George Pacheco, Jr. for the use of his computer hauler a.k.a. pick-up truck! And Alberto Caro for helping set up the lab computers at the Adult Literacy Council of the Concho Valley (ALC).
Speaking of the ALC, Marilynn Golightly, the ALC’s director, has graciously lent us a room to host our two Saturday weekend training course for TexOS Teens on April 20th and 27th. Down the road our goal will be to not only provide adult literacy such as reading and writing, but technology literacy as well. One of our main goals with TexOS – The Texas Open Source Project, is “Give a person a fish, they eat for a day. Teach them to fish, they eat for a lifetime.” We believe in teaching people the Open Source Mindset which is tied to Open Source Software and can freely and legally be shared with everyone which causes the service to be exponentially paid forward. Thus impacting more people’s lives through giving, sharing, collaborating and innovating.
If you have an old computer you’d like to donate to other TexOS Projects, please contact Brian Beck at beck@texos.org
